Waterfront Invitational Fine Arts Fair — Saugatuck — July 3, 2010

If you have ever been to Saugatuck Michigan in the summer you know how congested it can get when it is full of tourists and the yacht folks. Now add a whole bunch of anxious art fair vendors all trying to get their booths up and stocked; then reverse the whole process about 5:00 PM when the place is really teaming with tourists. It went amazingly well. The Saugatuck-Douglas Art Club really did a fine job of keeping things moving. I thought it was going to take hours to get out of there, but I was done and driving away in an hour and a half. Good time for me.

For an art fair vendors the real bottom-line is whether one sells a reasonable portion of what one brought or at least as good as one usually does at a quality fair. It is all fine and good to meet some new folks, if the weather in fine, and the amenities provided by the fair are at least average. But when done is driving away it is how much did you sell. Did you make ‘show’ and sell enough to have made the trip and expenses worth your while?  Well this show did that. There were very good crowds and after a while I could see that they had bags in their hands that were going home. I did meet some nice folks both customers and other vendors. The weather was fantastic. My canopy was under the shade of several trees. The amenities were just fine. I sold enough to make it worth the while.

Here is a riddle I thought of in one of the down times during the day:

How do know you are at an art fair?

No one is carrying their new yard ornament!
